Compaq was an American personal computer company founded in 1982. It was one of the first major companies to compete with IBM in the personal computer market. Compaq was known for its portable computers, particularly the Compaq Portable and the Compaq LTE. Compaq's success in the late 1980s and early 1990s was partly due to its ability to clone IBM's PC, allowing it to offer IBM-compatible computers at lower prices. Compaq was acquired by Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2002 for $25 billion, the largest technology merger at the time. After the merger, the Compaq brand was phased out and all of its products were rebranded as HP products.
