Bernie Sanders ran for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in 2016. He was a relatively unknown senator from Vermont when he announced his candidacy, but his progressive platform quickly gained traction among voters who were disillusioned with the status quo and frustrated with the growing economic inequality in the country.
Sanders's platform included policies such as a Medicare-for-all single-payer healthcare system, tuition-free public college, a $15 minimum wage, and an overhaul of the criminal justice system. He also spoke out against income inequality and the influence of big money in politics.
Despite facing off against Hillary Clinton, a well-known and established candidate with the support of the Democratic Party establishment, Sanders gained a passionate following and won several primary contests. Ultimately, however, he was not able to secure enough delegates to win the nomination and Clinton became the Democratic nominee.
Sanders's campaign was seen as a major force in pushing the Democratic Party to the left and sparking a progressive movement that has continued to gain momentum in the years since.
