The national flag of the United Kingdom, commonly known as the Union Jack, features a combination of the flags of three countries: England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. The flag is composed of a blue background with a red cross of Saint George, the patron saint of England, overlaid with a white diagonal cross of Saint Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. The white diagonal cross is superimposed over the red diagonal cross of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, which is itself superimposed over the red cross of Saint George.

The design of the flag dates back to 1801, when the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was formed. The Union Jack represents the unity of the three nations under one monarchy and government. The blue color of the background is sometimes interpreted as representing loyalty, while the red and white colors of the crosses are associated with bravery and peace, respectively.

The flag is commonly flown on public and national holidays, as well as on important government buildings and military vessels. The ratio of the width to the length of the flag is 1:2.
