The Hummer is a brand of large, off-road vehicles that were originally developed by AM General, a subsidiary of General Motors (GM), for military use. The first civilian Hummer models were introduced in 1992 and were based on the military Humvee (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle).
Hummer vehicles are known for their ruggedness and off-road capabilities, as well as their large size and distinctive appearance. They were initially marketed as luxury vehicles, but their fuel efficiency and environmental impact caused them to become controversial.
The Hummer brand was owned by GM from 1999 to 2010, during which time several models were introduced, including the H1, H2, and H3. However, due to economic and environmental pressures, GM decided to discontinue the brand in 2010.
In 2020, General Motors announced that the Hummer is returning as an all-electric pickup truck, set to be released in the fall of 2021.
Hummer is a symbol of American culture, which is associated with off-road adventure and luxury, but also criticized for its poor fuel economy, emissions, and its impact on the environment. It was a status symbol for many people, but also a target of criticism from environmental groups.
