AltaVista was one of the first web search engines, launched in 1995. It was developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) and became one of the most popular search engines of its time, thanks to its ability to index large amounts of information and provide highly relevant search results.
AltaVista used a technology called web crawling to index and catalog the content of websites, and it also had a feature that allowed users to search for images and audio files. It also had a translation feature that allowed users to translate web pages from one language to another.
At its peak, AltaVista was handling millions of search queries per day, and it was considered the top search engine in the world. However, its popularity declined in the late 1990s and early 2000s, as newer search engines like Google and Yahoo gained popularity. In 2003, AltaVista was purchased by Yahoo and eventually shut down in 2013.
