Amdahl Corporation was an American computer systems company that specialized in IBM mainframe-compatible computer systems and software. The company was founded in 1970 by Gene Amdahl, who was a former IBM employee and architect of the IBM System/360 mainframe. Amdahl Corporation was based in Sunnyvale, California. The company's flagship product was the Amdahl 470V/6 mainframe, which was fully compatible with IBM's System/360 and System/370 systems and could run the same software.
Amdahl Corporation was considered as one of the leading player in the mainframe-compatible computer systems market and was a major competitor to IBM during the 1970s and 1980s. The company was later acquired by Fujitsu in 1997, but the Amdahl brand was phased out as Fujitsu's mainframe business was integrated into its own.
