The American Hockey League (AHL) is the top professional ice hockey league in North America outside of the National Hockey League (NHL). Established in 1936, the AHL serves as a development league for the NHL and is home to many of the top young players in the game.

With 32 teams located in the United States and Canada, the AHL is divided into two conferences – the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference – and four divisions within each conference. The league has a 76-game regular season schedule, with the playoffs culminating in the Calder Cup championship.

Many NHL players have honed their skills in the AHL before being called up to the NHL, and the league is known for its high level of competition. In addition to developing young players, the AHL also serves as a platform for players to continue their careers after being released from NHL contracts.

The AHL has a long history of success, with numerous teams winning the Calder Cup and many players going on to successful NHL careers. The league continues to grow in popularity and is an important part of the development of professional hockey in North America.
