The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) is an auxiliary organization of the American Legion, which is a veterans' organization in the United States. The ALA is made up of women who are mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, granddaughters, and grandmothers of veterans, as well as women veterans themselves. It was founded in 1919, with the same year as American Legion, and it works in support of the mission and programs of the American Legion.
The ALA's mission is to support veterans, active-duty military, and their families, and to promote patriotism and support for the principles of democracy and freedom. The organization's main focus is on serving veterans and military families, especially those who are in need. Some of the programs and services offered by the ALA include financial assistance, educational scholarships, counseling, job training and placement, and housing assistance.
ALA also runs several programs for young people, including the American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation and the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State programs, which teach leadership and citizenship skills. They also run a program called Children and Youth, which focuses on mentoring young people in the community and encourages community service.
The American Legion Auxiliary is an entirely separate organization from the American Legion, though they work closely together to support veterans and military families. The organization is funded by its members, with additional funding from the American Legion Auxiliary National Emergency Fund and the American Legion Auxiliary Foundation.
