The Motherland Party (ANAP) was founded in 1983 by Turgut Özal and remained in power uninterrupted for eight consecutive years until 1991. The party also participated in various coalition governments between 1996 and 2002.

ANAP is considered a turning point in Turkish political history. The party's establishment was an important part of the democratization process that began after the 1980 coup. Foundation and early years

ANAP was founded on May 20, 1983, by Turgut Özal. Özal was the economy minister in the National Security Council established after the 1980 coup. ANAP's establishment was associated with Özal's desire to ensure the continuation of the 24 January 1980 economic reforms.

ANAP won the 1983 general elections with 45.1% of the vote, winning 292 seats in parliament. Turgut Özal became Turkey's 19th Prime Minister after ANAP's victory.

Single-party rule period

ANAP remained in power uninterrupted for eight years from 1983 to 1991. During this period, Turkey experienced significant economic and political developments.

In the economic field, ANAP continued the 24 January 1980 economic reforms. The party implemented free market economy and export-led growth policies. As a result of these policies, Turkey's economy grew significantly.

In the political field, ANAP accelerated the democratization process. The party contributed to the liberalization of political life by making changes to the political parties law and the election law.

Coalition period

In the 1991 general elections, ANAP won 36.3% of the vote and became the second party. The party won 192 seats in parliament. ANAP formed a coalition government with the True Path Party between 1991 and 1995.

In the 1995 general elections, ANAP won 24.6% of the vote and became the third party. The party won 135 seats in parliament. ANAP formed a coalition government with the True Path Party and the Welfare Party between 1996 and 1997.

Closure

In the 2002 general elections, ANAP won 9.5% of the vote and became the fourth party. The party won 66 seats in parliament. ANAP merged with the Democratic Party in 2002 to form the Democratic Party-Motherland Party (D-ANAP). D-ANAP failed to nominate a candidate in the 2002 presidential elections and did not participate in the elections. The party merged with the Democratic Party on October 31, 2009, to form the Democratic Party (DP).
