Apple and Google announced in April 2020 that they were partnering to develop technology to help slow the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. As part of the partnership, the two companies developed a framework for building contact tracing apps that could be used by public health agencies to track and slow the spread of the virus.
The contact tracing apps use Bluetooth technology to anonymously track the movements of individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19. When two individuals who have the app installed come into close proximity, their phones exchange anonymous Bluetooth signals. If one of the individuals later tests positive for COVID-19, they can opt to share this information with the app, which will then notify the other individual that they may have been in close contact with an infected person. The goal of the contact tracing apps is to help people understand their risk of exposure to the virus and take appropriate precautions to protect themselves and others.
