Arista Records was an American record label founded in 1974 by Clive Davis. The label was named after Davis' assistant, Arista Austin. Arista specialized in pop, rock, and R&B music, and was home to many successful artists, such as Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and Barry Manilow.
In 1979, Arista was acquired by German media conglomerate Bertelsmann, and became part of the BMG (Bertelsmann Music Group) label group. Under BMG, Arista continued to release successful albums and signed new artists, such as Santana and Pink. In 2004, BMG was merged with Sony Music Entertainment, and Arista became part of the Sony BMG label group.
In 2011, Sony BMG was restructured and Arista Records was merged with RCA Records. The Arista brand was retired and the label's artists and catalog were integrated into the RCA roster. Arista's legacy lives on through the many successful artists and albums that were released on the label during its 37-year history.
