The national flag of Armenia consists of three equal horizontal bands of red, blue, and orange. The colors on the flag have the following symbolic meanings:
Red represents the Armenian Highland and the blood shed by Armenian soldiers in defense of their country.
Blue represents the Armenian people's determination to live under peaceful skies.
Orange represents the Armenian people's creativity and hard work.
The flag was first used in 1918, during the short-lived First Armenian Republic. It was then readopted as the national flag when Armenia gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The current design of the flag was created by artist Martiros Sarian, who was inspired by the colors used in Armenian medieval miniature paintings.
