Batasuna was a political party in the Basque region of Spain. It was founded in 1978 and was initially associated with the armed separatist group ETA. The party advocated for Basque independence and sought to establish a sovereign Basque state.

In 2002, the Spanish government declared Batasuna illegal, citing its links to ETA and its support for violence. The party was banned and several of its leaders were arrested and imprisoned. Despite this, the party continued to operate underground and its supporters continued to engage in political activism.

In 2010, the Spanish Supreme Court upheld the ban on Batasuna, ruling that the party had not sufficiently distanced itself from ETA and its violent tactics. This effectively ended the party's ability to participate in Spanish politics.

Following the ban, several splinter groups emerged from the remains of Batasuna, including Sortu and EH Bildu. These parties continued to advocate for Basque independence, but renounced violence and sought to achieve their goals through peaceful means.

Despite its ban, Batasuna continued to have a significant impact on Basque politics. Its supporters remained a vocal and active part of the political landscape in the region, and the issues championed by the party, such as Basque independence and the rights of the Basque people, continue to be relevant in the ongoing political debates in the region.
