A constellation is a group of stars that forms a recognizable pattern when viewed from Earth. The ancient Greeks were the first to identify and name many of the constellations that are still in use today, and the majority of constellation names are derived from Greek mythology.
Constellations are typically named after animals, objects, or mythical figures. For example, the constellation Orion is named after the hunter in Greek mythology, while the constellation Ursa Major (the Great Bear) is named after the bear that was transformed into a constellation by Zeus.
The stars within a constellation are not necessarily physically related to each other, but they appear to be close together when viewed from Earth. This is because they are located at different distances from Earth, and their apparent proximity is simply an optical illusion.
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) is the official body responsible for naming and defining the boundaries of constellations. There are currently 88 officially recognized constellations.
