The Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) is the top professional ice hockey league in Germany. It was founded in 1994 and currently consists of 14 teams. The league operates a promotion and relegation system, with the top team in the second-tier league, the DEL2, having the opportunity to be promoted to the DEL. The bottom team in the DEL is relegated to the DEL2. The DEL is considered one of the top professional ice hockey leagues in Europe.
The DEL is organized by the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) and the league is run by an independent company, the Eishockeyliga GmbH. The regular season consists of 52 games for each team, after which the top eight teams qualify for the playoffs. The playoffs consist of a best-of-seven series to determine the DEL champion.
The DEL is known for its high level of competition and has produced many talented players who have gone on to play in the National Hockey League (NHL) in North America. Some of the top teams in the DEL include the Adler Mannheim, Eisbären Berlin, and Red Bull Munich.
