The United States Department of Labor (DOL) is a cabinet-level department of the federal government responsible for overseeing labor and employment issues. It was established in 1913, following the passage of the Department of Labor Act by Congress. The DOL's mission is to "foster, promote, and develop the welfare of the wage earners, job seekers, and retirees of the United States; improve working conditions; advance opportunities for profitable employment; and assure work-related benefits and rights." The DOL is headed by the Secretary of Labor, who is appointed by the President of the United States.
The DOL has a wide range of responsibilities, including enforcing federal labor laws, such as those governing minimum wage and overtime pay; administering unemployment insurance programs; overseeing the job training and vocational rehabilitation programs; and collecting and publishing labor and economic statistics. The DOL also plays a role in promoting safe and healthy working conditions, and in protecting workers' rights.
The DOL has several agencies and programs that carry out its various responsibilities, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Employment and Training Administration (ETA), and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). These agencies and programs work to ensure that workers are treated fairly, and that they have the tools and resources they need to succeed in the workforce.
