The Augustine Commission, also known as the Review of U.S. Human Space Flight Plans Committee, was a committee established by the United States government to review the nation's plans for human space flight. The committee was formed in 2009 and was chaired by Norman Augustine, a former CEO of aerospace company Lockheed Martin.
The Augustine Commission was tasked with examining the plans and goals of the United States human space flight program, as well as the programs and policies of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and other agencies involved in space exploration. The commission was asked to assess the feasibility and affordability of various options for the future of human space flight, and to recommend a path forward for the program.
The Augustine Commission released its final report in October 2009, which included a number of recommendations for the future of human space flight. These recommendations included increasing the use of commercial space companies, developing new technologies and capabilities, and prioritizing scientific exploration and discovery. The report also proposed a number of different options for the future direction of the human space flight program, including a "flexible path" approach that would allow for a range of destinations and missions.
