Mike Pence is an American politician who served as the 48th vice president of the United States from 2017 to 2021 under President Donald Trump. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served as the 50th governor of Indiana from 2013 to 2017 and as the 6th U.S. representative for Indiana's 6th congressional district from 2001 to 2013.
Pence was born in Columbus, Indiana, and graduated from Hanover College and Indiana University School of Law. He began his political career in the 1980s as a member of the Indiana House of Representatives. In 2000, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served for six terms. In 2012, he was elected governor of Indiana.
As governor, Pence was a conservative leader who signed into law a number of controversial measures, including a law that restricted abortion rights and a law that allowed businesses to refuse service to same-sex couples. He was also a vocal critic of the Affordable Care Act.
In 2016, Pence was selected by Donald Trump to be his running mate for president. The Trump-Pence ticket won the election, and Pence was sworn in as vice president on January 20, 2017.
