Ron DeSantis is an American politician and former military officer serving as the 46th governor of Florida since 2019. A member of the Republican Party, DeSantis represented Florida's 6th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2013 to 2018.
DeSantis was born in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1978. He graduated from Yale University in 2001 with a degree in history and Harvard Law School in 2005. After law school, DeSantis served as a U.S. Navy JAG officer. He was deployed to Iraq in 2007 and 2008.
After leaving the military, DeSantis worked as a lawyer in Florida. In 2012, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He served in the House for six years. During his time in Congress, DeSantis was a member of the House Freedom Caucus, a group of conservative Republicans.
In 2018, DeSantis ran for governor of Florida. He defeated Democratic nominee Andrew Gillum. DeSantis was sworn in as governor on January 8, 2019.
As governor, DeSantis has focused on issues such as education, healthcare, and the environment. He has also been a vocal critic of the Biden administration.
DeSantis is a controversial figure. He has been criticized for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and his support of former President Donald Trump. However, he remains popular among Republican voters in Florida.
In 2022, DeSantis was reelected governor of Florida. He defeated Democratic nominee Nikki Fried by a margin of 51% to 49%.
DeSantis is considered to be a potential candidate for president of the United States in 2024. He has not yet announced whether he will run.
