Soundgarden is an American rock band that was formed in Seattle, Washington in 1984. The band's original lineup consisted of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Chris Cornell, lead guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Hiro Yamamoto, and drummer Matt Cameron. Soundgarden's music is often classified as grunge, a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged in the Pacific Northwest in the late 1980s.
Soundgarden was one of the most successful bands of the grunge movement, along with other Seattle-based groups like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. The band released its first studio album, Ultramega OK, in 1988, and went on to release six more albums over the course of its career. Soundgarden's most successful album was 1994's Superunknown, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified five-times platinum in the United States.
Soundgarden disbanded in 1997, but announced a reunion in 2010. The band released its first studio album in 16 years, King Animal, in 2012. Tragically, Chris Cornell, the band's lead singer, died in 2017. Despite this, the remaining members of Soundgarden have continued to perform and tour, with Matt Cameron serving as the band's lead vocalist.
