STS-106 was a Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS) flown by Space Shuttle Atlantis. The mission launched on September 8, 2000, and was the fourth shuttle mission to visit the ISS. The primary objective of the mission was to bring supplies and equipment to the ISS and to prepare the station for the arrival of the first permanent crew. The mission also included the installation of a new air circulation system and the replacement of a faulty gyroscope.
The STS-106 mission patch features the Space Shuttle Atlantis with the International Space Station in the foreground and the Earth in the background. The patch also includes the mission slogan "Building the Future in Space" and the names of the seven crew members.
During the mission, the crew of Atlantis successfully delivered more than 6,600 pounds of supplies and equipment to the ISS, including a new air circulation system and a replacement gyroscope. They also installed the first set of solar arrays on the station, which would provide power to the ISS for the first time. The mission was considered a major milestone in the construction of the ISS, as it marked the beginning of the process of building a permanent presence in space.
