STS-107 was a Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS) flown by Space Shuttle Columbia. The mission launched on January 16, 2003, and was the final mission of the Space Shuttle Columbia. The primary objective of the mission was to conduct scientific experiments in microgravity. The mission included more than 80 experiments in the fields of Earth and space science, life sciences, and material science.
The STS-107 mission patch features the Space Shuttle Columbia with the motto "For the Children of the World" written in multiple languages. The patch also includes the names of the seven crew members and the mission slogan "A Journey of Discovery."
Tragically, the Space Shuttle Columbia and its crew were lost on February 1, 2003, when the shuttle broke apart during re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. The accident was caused by damage to the thermal protection system on the leading edge of the wing, which was caused by a piece of foam insulation that broke off during the shuttle's ascent and struck the wing. The STS-107 mission and the loss of the Columbia and its crew were a major setback for the U.S. space program, and led to the grounding of the shuttle fleet until the completion of the investigation and necessary repairs.
