STS-109 was a Space Shuttle mission to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) flown by Space Shuttle Columbia. The mission launched on March 1, 2002, and was the fourth servicing mission to the HST. The primary objective of the mission was to install new instruments and make repairs to the telescope, including the installation of a new Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and the replacement of the telescope's solar panels. The mission also included the first use of the robot arm-based Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS) pod to repair the telescope's insulation.
The STS-109 mission patch features the Space Shuttle Columbia with the Hubble Space Telescope in the foreground and the Earth in the background. The patch also includes the mission slogan "Exploring the Cosmos in the 21st Century" and the names of the seven crew members.
During the mission, the crew of Columbia successfully installed the ACS and replaced the telescope's solar panels, significantly improving the telescope's capabilities. They also made repairs to the telescope's insulation and installed a new computer and power control unit. The mission was considered a major success and helped to extend the life and capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope.
