STS-112 was a Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS) flown by Space Shuttle Atlantis. The mission launched on October 7, 2002, and was the fifteenth shuttle mission to visit the ISS. The primary objective of the mission was to install the S1 (S-one) Truss, which would provide additional structural support and a mounting point for solar arrays, radiators, and other equipment on the ISS. The mission also included the delivery of supplies and equipment to the ISS and the installation of a new gyroscope on the station.
The STS-112 mission patch features the Space Shuttle Atlantis with the International Space Station in the foreground and the Earth in the background. The patch also includes the mission slogan "Forging New Frontiers in Space" and the names of the seven crew members.
During the mission, the crew of Atlantis successfully installed the S1 Truss on the ISS and delivered more than 3,000 pounds of supplies and equipment to the station. They also installed a new gyroscope on the station and conducted a spacewalk to perform maintenance on the station's exterior. The mission was considered a success and helped to further the construction and expansion of the ISS.
