STS-114 was a Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS) flown by Space Shuttle Discovery. The mission launched on July 26, 2005, and was the first shuttle mission after the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003. The primary objective of the mission was to test and evaluate new safety procedures and techniques implemented in the wake of the Columbia disaster, including the use of a sensor-equipped boom to inspect the shuttle's thermal protection system for damage. The mission also included the delivery of supplies and equipment to the ISS and the installation of a spare gyroscope on the station.
The STS-114 mission patch features the Space Shuttle Discovery with the International Space Station in the foreground and the Earth in the background. The patch also includes the mission slogan "Return to Flight" and the names of the seven crew members.
During the mission, the crew of Discovery successfully tested and evaluated the new safety procedures and techniques implemented in the wake of the Columbia disaster. They also delivered more than 3,000 pounds of supplies and equipment to the ISS and installed a spare gyroscope on the station. The mission was considered a major milestone in the return to flight of the Space Shuttle program and helped to restore confidence in the safety of space travel.
