STS-118 was a Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS) flown by Space Shuttle Endeavour. The mission launched on August 8, 2007, and was the seventeenth shuttle mission to visit the ISS. The primary objective of the mission was to install the S5 (S-five) Truss, which would provide additional structural support and a mounting point for solar arrays, radiators, and other equipment on the ISS. The mission also included the delivery of supplies and equipment to the ISS and the rotation of the crew of the ISS.
The STS-118 crew consisted of seven astronauts, led by Commander Scott Kelly. The crew also included Pilot Charles Hobaugh and Mission Specialists Tracy Caldwell, Rick Mastracchio, Barbara Morgan, Dave Williams, and Alvin Drew.
During the mission, the crew of Endeavour successfully installed the S5 Truss on the ISS and delivered more than 4,000 pounds of supplies and equipment to the station. They also rotated the crew of the ISS, bringing back the Expedition 16 crew and delivering the Expedition 17 crew to the station. The mission included three spacewalks to perform maintenance and repair work on the ISS.
The STS-118 mission was considered a success and helped to further the construction and expansion of the ISS. It was the first mission to launch after the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003 and marked the return to flight of the Space Shuttle program.
