STS-119 was a Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS) flown by Space Shuttle Discovery. The mission launched on March 15, 2009, and was the eighteenth shuttle mission to visit the ISS. The primary objective of the mission was to deliver and install the S6 (S-six) Truss, which would provide additional structural support and a mounting point for solar arrays, radiators, and other equipment on the ISS. The mission also included the delivery of supplies and equipment to the ISS and the rotation of the crew of the ISS.
The STS-119 crew consisted of seven astronauts, led by Commander Lee Archambault. The crew also included Pilot Tony Antonelli and Mission Specialists Joseph Acaba, John Phillips, Steve Swanson, Richard Arnold, and Koichi Wakata.
During the mission, the crew of Discovery successfully delivered and installed the S6 Truss on the ISS and delivered more than 10,000 pounds of supplies and equipment to the station. They also rotated the crew of the ISS, bringing back the Expedition 17 crew and delivering the Expedition 18 crew to the station. The mission included four spacewalks to perform maintenance and repair work on the ISS.
The STS-119 mission was considered a success and helped to further the construction and expansion of the ISS. It marked the final mission of the Space Shuttle program to carry a Truss Segment to the ISS.
