STS-122 was a Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS) flown by Space Shuttle Atlantis. The mission launched on February 7, 2008, and was the sixteenth shuttle mission to visit the ISS. The primary objective of the mission was to deliver and install the European Space Agency's Columbus laboratory to the ISS. The Columbus laboratory was a research facility that would allow the ISS crew to perform a variety of experiments in the fields of biology, materials science, and other disciplines. The mission also included the delivery of supplies and equipment to the ISS and the rotation of the crew of the ISS.

The STS-122 crew consisted of seven astronauts, led by Commander Stephen Frick. The crew also included Pilot Alan Poindexter and Mission Specialists Leland Melvin, Rex Walheim, Hans Schlegel, Stanley Love, and Leopold Eyharts.

During the mission, the crew of Atlantis successfully delivered and installed the Columbus laboratory to the ISS and delivered more than 7,000 pounds of supplies and equipment to the station. They also rotated the crew of the ISS, bringing back the Expedition 16 crew and delivering the Expedition 17 crew to the station. The mission included three spacewalks to perform maintenance and repair work on the ISS.

The STS-122 mission was considered a success and helped to further the construction and expansion of the ISS. It marked the first time that the ISS had a laboratory dedicated to European research.
