STS-123 was a Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS) flown by Space Shuttle Endeavour. The mission launched on March 11, 2008, and was the seventeenth shuttle mission to visit the ISS. The primary objective of the mission was to deliver and install the Japanese Experiment Module - Pressurized Module (JEM-PM), also known as the Kibo module, to the ISS. The JEM-PM was the primary component of the Japanese Experiment Module and provided additional living and working space for the ISS crew. The mission also included the delivery of supplies and equipment to the ISS and the rotation of the crew of the ISS.

The STS-123 crew consisted of seven astronauts, led by Commander Dominic Gorie. The crew also included Pilot Gregory Johnson and Mission Specialists Rick Linnehan, Mike Foreman, Robert L. Behnken, Garrett Reisman, and Takao Doi.

During the mission, the crew of Endeavour successfully delivered and installed the JEM-PM to the ISS and delivered more than 7,000 pounds of supplies and equipment to the station. They also rotated the crew of the ISS, bringing back the Expedition 16 crew and delivering the Expedition 17 crew to the station. The mission included four spacewalks to perform maintenance and repair work on the ISS.

The STS-123 mission was considered a success and helped to further the construction and expansion of the ISS. It marked the first time that the ISS had a laboratory dedicated to Japanese research and the first time that a Japanese astronaut, Takao Doi, had visited the ISS.
