STS-124 was a Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS) flown by Space Shuttle Discovery. The mission launched on May 31, 2008, and was the nineteenth shuttle mission to visit the ISS. The primary objective of the mission was to deliver and install the Japanese Experiment Module - Exposed Facility (JEM-EF), also known as the Kibo module, to the ISS. The JEM-EF was a platform on the outside of the ISS that would allow the ISS crew to perform experiments in the fields of materials science, biology, and other disciplines. The mission also included the delivery of supplies and equipment to the ISS and the rotation of the crew of the ISS.

The STS-124 crew consisted of seven astronauts, led by Commander Mark Kelly. The crew also included Pilot Ken Ham and Mission Specialists Karen Nyberg, Ron Garan, Mike Fossum, Akihiko Hoshide, and Greg Chamitoff.

During the mission, the crew of Discovery successfully delivered and installed the JEM-EF to the ISS and delivered more than 10,000 pounds of supplies and equipment to the station. They also rotated the crew of the ISS, bringing back the Expedition 17 crew and delivering the Expedition 18 crew to the station. The mission included four spacewalks to perform maintenance and repair work on the ISS.

The STS-124 mission was considered a success and helped to further the construction and expansion of the ISS. It marked the first time that the ISS had an external platform for experiments and the first time that a Japanese astronaut, Akihiko Hoshide, had visited the ISS.
