The mission launched on April 5, 2010, and was the twenty-third shuttle mission to visit the ISS. The primary objective of the mission was to deliver and install the Integrated Cargo Carrier-Vertical Light Deployable (ICC-VLD), which was filled with supplies and equipment for the ISS, and to perform maintenance and repair work on the station. The mission also included the rotation of the crew of the ISS.

The STS-131 crew consisted of seven astronauts, led by Commander Alan Poindexter. The crew also included Pilot James Dutton and Mission Specialists Rick Mastracchio, Clayton Anderson, Dorothy Metcalf-Lindenburger, Stephanie Wilson, and Naoko Yamazaki.

During the mission, the crew of Discovery successfully delivered and installed the ICC-VLD to the ISS and delivered more than 13,000 pounds of supplies and equipment to the station. They also performed maintenance and repair work on the ISS and rotated the crew of the ISS, bringing back the Expedition 24 crew and delivering the Expedition 25 crew to the station. The mission included three spacewalks to perform maintenance and repair work on the ISS.
