STS-2 (Space Transportation System-2) was the second manned spaceflight mission of the Space Shuttle Columbia. It was launched on November 12, 1981, and completed its mission on November 14, 1981. The mission was the first time a space shuttle had flown twice and the first time a manned spacecraft had been launched into space twice on the same vehicle.
The primary goal of STS-2 was to test the space shuttle's reusable thermal protection system and to conduct various scientific experiments. The mission also included the deployment of two communications satellites and the retrieval of a third satellite for repair.
The STS-2 crew consisted of Commander Joe H. Engle and Pilot Richard H. Truly. Engle and Truly spent just over two days in space and completed a total of 37 orbits around the Earth. The mission was considered a success, paving the way for future space shuttle missions.
