The American Legion is a non-profit veterans' organization in the United States. It was founded in 1919 by veterans returning from World War I, and is made up of U.S. military veterans who have served during wartime. The organization's mission is to provide support and assistance to veterans, their families, and their communities.
The American Legion has a national headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana and it has a nationwide network of local posts, which are community-based organizations that provide a variety of programs and services. The organization has a strong focus on advocacy, lobbying the government on veterans' issues, and working to improve the lives of veterans and their families.

The American Legion also has a strong focus on youth programs and it sponsors a variety of activities for young people, including the Boys State and Girls State programs, which teach leadership and citizenship skills, as well as American Legion Baseball and American Legion Auxiliary programs for girls.
The American Legion is funded by its members, with additional funding from the American Legion National Emergency Fund and the American Legion Child Welfare Foundation.
