The Architect of the Capitol (AOC) is an independent agency of the United States federal government that is responsible for the maintenance, operation, development, and preservation of the United States Capitol complex, which includes the United States Capitol, the Senate and House Office Buildings, the Congressional Library, and the United States Botanic Garden. The AOC also provides support services to the United States Congress and serves as the administrative and technical staff for the Office of the Congressional Record.
The AOC is led by the Architect of the Capitol, who is appointed by the President of the United States with the advice and consent of the Senate. The current Architect of the Capitol is Elizabeth K. Miller.
The AOC is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the Capitol building and its grounds, as well as the maintenance and operation of the Senate and House Office Buildings, the Congressional Library, and the United States Botanic Garden. It also manages the development of new construction projects within the Capitol complex, including the planning and design of new buildings and renovations of existing structures. The AOC works closely with the United States Congress to ensure that the Capitol complex meets the needs of the legislative branch and serves as a symbol of the nation.
