The U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) was a U.S. government agency that was responsible for the development and regulation of nuclear energy and technology from 1946 to 1974. The AEC was created by the Atomic Energy Act of 1946, which established a system of federal regulation and control over the production, use, and disposal of atomic energy.

The AEC was responsible for the construction and operation of nuclear facilities, including research laboratories, power plants, and weapons production plants. It also oversaw the development of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, such as medicine and agriculture. In 1974, the AEC was dissolved and its functions were split between two new agencies: the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA). The NRC is responsible for the regulation of nuclear energy and technology, while the ERDA was responsible for the development of energy resources, including nuclear energy.
