The 1980 United States Census was the 20th United States Census. It was conducted by the Census Bureau and the data collected was used to determine the number of seats each state would have in the United States House of Representatives. The 1980 Census also gathered data on a range of demographic characteristics, including age, race, gender, education, and income.

In 1980, the United States had a population of 226,545,805 people. The Census found that the population was 52.4% female and 47.6% male. The racial makeup of the population was 79.6% White, 11.7% Black or African American, 0.4% American Indian and Alaska Native, 3.4% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and 4.8% of other races. The Hispanic or Latino population made up 6.5% of the total population.

The 1980 Census also collected data on the employment status, industry, and occupation of the population. It found that the unemployment rate was 5.8%. The largest employment sectors were manufacturing, retail trade, and healthcare. The most common occupations were management, sales, and office work.

The 1980 Census was the first to be conducted using a computerized data collection system. The data collected in the 1980 Census was used to inform policy decisions, allocate government funding, and plan for the future.
