The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is a voluntary program administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) that provides financial incentives to farmers and ranchers to convert environmentally sensitive land to grasses, trees, and other vegetation that help protect soil, water, and wildlife resources. The program was first established in the Food Security Act of 1985 and has been reauthorized several times since then.
The CRP has undergone a number of changes over the years, including modifications to the types of practices that are eligible for enrollment, the duration of contracts, and the payment rates. As of 2021, the CRP is in its 20th year of operation and is currently authorized through 2023.
The CRP has been credited with helping to improve the environmental quality of the nation's agricultural lands, including reducing soil erosion, improving water quality, and enhancing wildlife habitat. It has also been an important source of income for farmers and ranchers, particularly during times of low commodity prices.
