The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States. It is the primary federal agency responsible for conducting and supporting research on the causes, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart, lung, and blood disorders. The NHLBI works to improve the health of the public by supporting and conducting research on a wide range of health issues related to the heart, lungs, and blood, including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, lung cancer, asthma, and blood disorders such as anemia and sickle cell disease. Some of the NHLBI's research initiatives include the Women's Health Initiative, the Framingham Heart Study, and the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program.
