Wise, formerly known as TransferWise, was founded in 2011 by Taavet Hinrikus and Kristo Käärmann with the mission of making international money transfers cheaper, fairer, and simpler. The idea for Wise emerged from their personal experiences with high bank fees and unfavorable exchange rates.

Taavet, the first employee at Skype, was living in London and getting paid in euros, while Kristo, working at Deloitte, was earning in British pounds but had a mortgage in Estonia that needed to be paid in euros. Frustrated by the high costs and inefficiencies of traditional banks, they developed a smarter way to transfer money internationally.

Evolution and Growth

Initially operating under the name TransferWise, the company quickly gained traction for its transparent and low-cost money transfer services. Over the years, Wise expanded its offerings to include multi-currency accounts, debit cards, and business accounts. Reflecting this broader scope, the company rebranded as Wise in 2021.

Today, millions of individuals and businesses use Wise to manage their money internationally in a faster, cheaper, and more transparent way. With a Wise account, users can hold balances in over 50 currencies and spend abroad with ease. The company has also partnered with businesses like Monzo, Bolt, and GoCardless to enhance international banking services.

Going Public and Future Vision

In 2021, Wise went public through a direct listing on the London Stock Exchange, reaching a valuation of $11 billion. Despite its rapid growth, the company remains committed to its core mission: building a borderless financial system where money moves faster, more conveniently, and ultimately for free.

Wise continues to innovate, offering international money transfers and multi-currency accounts to individuals and businesses worldwide, making financial transactions seamless and cost-effective.
