Ares was a series of spacecraft and launch vehicles that were developed by NASA as part of its Project Constellation. The project was initiated in 2004 with the goal of returning humans to the Moon and establishing a permanent presence there. Ares was intended to be a key component of this effort, providing the means to transport crew and cargo to and from the Moon.
The Ares program consisted of two main vehicles: the Ares I and Ares V. The Ares I was a crew launch vehicle that was designed to transport astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) and other destinations in low Earth orbit. The Ares V was a heavy-lift launch vehicle that was intended to be used for sending large payloads, such as lunar landers and other equipment, to the Moon.
However, the Ares program was cancelled in 2010 as part of a broader restructuring of NASA's human spaceflight program. In its place, NASA developed the Space Launch System (SLS) and the Orion spacecraft, which are currently being used for human exploration beyond low Earth orbit.
