STS-79 was a Space Shuttle mission that was launched on September 16, 1996, from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, United States. The primary goal of the mission was to deliver supplies, equipment, and personnel to the Russian Mir space station, as well as to perform a number of scientific experiments.

The STS-79 mission patch features a depiction of the Space Shuttle Atlantis docked with the Mir space station, with the Russian and American flags on either side. The patch also includes the mission number (STS-79) and the names of the crew members, as well as the motto "Partners in Exploration." The blue and green colors on the patch represent Earth and the universe, respectively, and the silver star represents the space station. The patch was designed by artist Paul Pierpont.
