Tesco is a British multinational grocery and general merchandise retailer headquartered in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England. It is the third-largest retailer in the world measured by gross revenues and the ninth-largest retailer in the world measured by revenues. It has stores in 12 countries across Asia and Europe, and is the market leader of groceries in the UK, Ireland, Hungary, Malaysia, and Thailand.
Tesco was founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen as a group of market stalls. The company grew rapidly, and by 1939 it operated more than 100 stores. In the late 1990s, Tesco expanded into non-food items such as clothing and household items, and in the early 2000s, it expanded into Central and Eastern Europe and Asia. Today, Tesco is a multi-billion-dollar company and is known for its wide range of products and services, including groceries, clothing, home goods, financial services, and telecommunications.
In addition to its retail operations, Tesco is also involved in charitable work and sustainability initiatives. The company has a long history of supporting community projects and has established a number of sustainability goals, including reducing its carbon emissions and becoming a zero-waste business.
The Tesco logo has undergone several changes since its foundation in 1919. The current one in use since 1996 features the logotype in a serif typeface in red, with blue stripe reflections underneath. The typeface used for it is called Tesco Bold by Dalton Maag. It is a commissioned work and not available for the public. However, another font with a similar touch would be ITC Newtext Regular by Ray Baker.
