TikTok, or Douyin as it is known in China, is a social media platform based on Musical.ly that enables video creation and sharing as well as live streaming. It was launched in September 2016 by ByteDance. It is the leading short video platform in Asia and has expanded to other countries, becoming the fastest growing app for short-form music videos.
The app, which allows users to create short videos in musical, dance, comedy, acting, lip sync and other genres, has surpassed the 1 billion user mark in 150 countries. The social media platform is used to make a variety of short-form videos ranging from fifteen seconds to three minutes in genres such as dance, comedy and education. TikTok is an international version of Douyin, which was launched in the Chinese market in September 2016. Later in 2017, TikTok was released for iOS and Android in most markets outside China. On August 2, 2018, it became available worldwide after merging with musical.ly, another Chinese social media service. Services that currently compete with TikTok worldwide are YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels.
TikTok has global offices in Los Angeles, New York, London, Paris, Berlin, Berlin, Dubai, Mumbai, Singapore, Jakarta, Jakarta, Seoul and Tokyo.
