The United States Department of Defense (DoD) is a federal executive department of the U.S. government responsible for coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government concerned directly with national security and the United States armed forces. The DoD is headquartered at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and is led by the Secretary of Defense, who is a member of the Cabinet.
The DoD is responsible for the management and operation of the U.S. military, which includes the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. The DoD also manages a number of other agencies and programs that support the military, including the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA).
In addition to its role in national security and military affairs, the DoD is also involved in a number of other areas, including intelligence, cybersecurity, research and development, and humanitarian assistance. The DoD works closely with other government agencies and departments, as well as with international partners, to achieve its mission of protecting the national security of the United States.
