The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is a federal law in the United States that gives members of the public the right to request access to records and information held by the government. The Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966 and has been amended several times since then.

Under FOIA, any person has the right to request access to federal agency records, with some exceptions. Federal agencies are required to disclose records upon request, unless the records are protected from disclosure by one of the Act's nine exemptions or three exclusions. Exemptions include information that is classified for national security purposes, personal privacy, and trade secrets, among others.

FOIA provides a means for the public to hold the government accountable and to access information about the operations and activities of the government. The Act is administered by the Office of Government Information Services (OGIS), which provides guidance to agencies and the public on the use of FOIA.
