The ECHL (formerly known as the East Coast Hockey League) is a professional minor league ice hockey league with teams in the United States and Canada. It is considered to be a tier below the American Hockey League (AHL), which is the top development league for the National Hockey League (NHL). The ECHL was founded in 1988 and currently has 26 teams.
The ECHL is known for its high-scoring, fast-paced style of play and has a strong following among hockey fans. Many players who have gone on to successful careers in the NHL have developed their skills in the ECHL.
